Millie and the Worry Bird

Helping Children Identify and Cope with Anxiety

MILLIE AND THE WORRY BIRD HELPING CHILDREN IDENTIFY AND COPE WITH ANXIETY

Meet Millie, who loves to have fun and be silly. She can be troubled sometimes by her worries. This is when the Worry Bird toots its horn. Watch whilst Millie overcomes her fears at school, in a storm and at the beach. With the help of her parents, Millie uses strategies to be happy and carefree again.

This book is designed to entertain children with its sense of fun, familiarity and colour.  Cleverly embedded in the book are values of gratitude, trust, secure attachment and family fun.

Reading this book to your child can help you both to identify and cope with common presentations of childhood anxiety.

The book focuses on separation anxiety and childhood fears of thunderstorms and swimming in the ocean.

Like many children, Millie demonstrates her anxiety in her thinking, how she feels physically sick and in her hiding and checking behaviours.

The chorus represents Millie identifying her anxiety.  It shows a mindful strategy of becoming still and sending worry thoughts away using the worry bird as a visual tool.

"Toot no more, little worry bird.
Fly away so you can't be heard!"

After each chorus page in the book is a page demonstrating examples of more helpful thinking.  This can lead to lower anxiety.

You can help your child to have more helpful thinking and behaviours just like the parents help Millie in this book.

Through this fun and colourful story, we witness Millie’s successes in coping with anxiety allowing her to quickly return to her happy life.

In addition to reading the book, our colouring and activity sheets will compliment lessons learned.
